Info sessions in Padelford C-101: Weds 1/25 at 3:30 & Fri 1/27 at 1:30

When you think of Bavaria, do you think of the giant beer steins and sausages of Oktoberfest? A well-tuned society with Germany’s highest standard of living? Or do you think of the horrific rise of the Nazi party? Or the current ban on teachers wearing headscarves to work?

Our one-month program will attempt to trace the various efforts towards defining national identity in modern Bavaria, traveling to medieval style castles, Nazi bunkers, the site of the Nuremberg trials, the Olympic Park, Munich’s celebrated new Jewish Museum, and many others. We will be based in Munich, which Lonely Planet describes as “sexy, sophisticated and self-confident … a trove of cultural delights and a relaxed flair”.

This 5-credit program is open to all majors, eligible for federal financial aid, and has no minimum GPA. Ability to speak German is not required. Apply now!

Thursday, January 26th

12:30-1:30pm
Thomson Hall 317
No registration required

Want to intern or study abroad this summer? Not sure how to pay for it? Come learn about opportunities to go abroad and ways to fund your experience at this joint SIT/Ie3 info session!

SIT/World Learning has $18,000 in funding available for UW students for the 2012-2013 academic year. SIT Study Abroad sponsors a special need-based scholarship for students from the UW who participate on SIT Study Abroad programs. Scholarship awards vary according to financial need and can range from $500-$5,000 for semester programs and from $300-$3,000 for summer programs.

IE3 partners with UW to make sure students who intern abroad have a safe experience while doing meaningful work and earning credits towards their degree. Come to the IE3 info session Thursday to learn more about what kind of work is available, what regions they send students to, and most importantly – funding opportunities! The deadline for applying to IE3 Summer Internships is January 25th, but applications will be extended in select cases due to last week’s weather – so if you are still interested in a summer internship abroad, please come to the info session this Thursday! Please visit ie3global.ous.edu to find out more and for a list of current internships available.

Please join us and feel free to bring and eat your lunch.

5-credit course offered Spring 2012:

EDPSY 420 Bullies, victims, and bystanders: Social power in school and workplace

Either in school or the workplace, most individuals encounter bullying as an aggressor, victim or bystander. Individuals may also have supervisory responsibilities for groups in which bullying and retaliation occur. Classroom participation, academic achievement, workplace productivity and mental health indicators typically decline after people are bullied. Yet rigorous research indicates that bullying, retaliation, and destructive bystander behavior decrease given systemic intervention. This class will draw on developmental, social psychological, evolutionary and sociocultural models and research to understand how individual characteristics, peers, organizations and culture may influence bullying and retaliation cycles. Practical solutions and barriers to intervention will be addressed.

POSITION: SeaSol Member

ORGANIZATION: Seattle Solidarity Network

CONTEXT

Seattle Solidarity (“SeaSol”) is a volunteer network of working people who believe in standing up for our rights. Our goal is to support our fellow workers’ strikes and struggles, build solidarity, and organize to deal with specific job, housing, and other problems.

WORK DESCRIPTION

We are looking for two students to work with us 3-5 hours per week to help organize direct action campaigns regarding specific work and tenant related problems. Please check out our website at www.seasol.net to see what this looks like in practice. At a minimum, your work with us would involve meeting up with SeaSol members once a week to help put up posters, participate in pickets, and carry out whatever other direct action tactics SeaSol is currently involved in. At a maximum, you would be welcome to join our all-volunteer organizing committee to become more involved with the actual planning and decision making of our organization at our weekly meetings (Moday nights in Columbia City from 7-9pm).

Interested students should contact:
